What Qualifies for Certification?
Before a pre-owned vehicle can earn the Smart Certified designation, it must meet specific mileage, age, inspection, and certification requirements.
125,000 Miles or Less
The vehicle must have 125,000 miles or fewer on the odometer at the time of purchase.
15 Model Years or Newer
The vehicle must be 15 model years old or newer as of January 1 of the current year.
Certified Before Purchase
The vehicle must meet all Smart Certified requirements and receive certification before it is purchased.
100% Inspection & Reconditioning
Every qualifying vehicle must pass the required inspection and meet all applicable reconditioning standards.
Eligibility Requirements
Vehicle age is calculated as of January 1st of the model year. Vehicles that do not meet the required mileage, age, inspection, or reconditioning standards cannot receive the Smart Certified designation.
Program Exclusions
To uphold the standards of the Smart Certified program, certain vehicle types, titles, conditions, and operational uses are excluded from certification.

- Trucks rated over one ton
- Motor homes
- Exotic or high-performance vehicles
Title & Specification
- Branded titles, including salvage, flood, or totaled
- Non-U.S. specification or Canadian market vehicles

- "AS-IS" vehicle purchases
- Uninspected vehicles or unresolved defects
Commercial Use
- Hauling and construction work
- Daily rental applications
- Towing or road service operations
- Snowplowing and company pools
Government & Emergency
- Government or military fleet service
- Law enforcement operations
- Fire, ambulance, or emergency services
Business Travel
- Vehicles utilized by multiple business drivers
The Smart Certified Comprehensive Limited Warranty is non-cancellable and non-transferable. Coverage is governed exclusively by the terms, limitations, and conditions found in the Smart Certified Limited Warranty Form and Information Schedule.
